Hockey Academy History

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (PMHA) was founded in 2015 by Rod Collins, who recognized an opportunity to bring elite hockey development and academic excellence to the community of Pilot Mound, Manitoba. With decades of experience in hockey development and academy programming, Rod has worked with and helped develop some of the game’s most recognizable players, including NHL stars Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews.

PMHA began with a single male hockey team composed of student-athletes from across Canada and around the world, including the United States, Finland, and Ukraine. From the very beginning, the academy embraced a global perspective while maintaining the values and close-knit atmosphere of a small prairie community.

Supported by the unwavering commitment of the Pilot Mound community, the academy quickly established itself as a destination for student-athletes seeking high-level hockey training combined with a strong academic foundation. As enrollment grew, PMHA expanded its programming to include a female team, enhanced training facilities, and additional coaching and development resources.

Today, Pilot Mound Hockey Academy has grown into a comprehensive student-athlete development program offering five competitive teams:

  • Male U15 Prep
  • Male U17
  • Male U17 Prep
  • Male U18 Prep
  • Female U18 Prep

PMHA continues to attract athletes from across Canada and around the world, providing professional coaching, personalized development, and a supportive environment where students can grow as players, students, and young leaders. While the academy has evolved significantly since its founding, its mission remains unchanged: to help student-athletes achieve their full potential both on and off the ice.

League & Governing Body Affiliation

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy is a Hockey Canada–registered sports school and operates under the sanctioning of Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada, ensuring our programs meet the highest standards of player development, safety, and organizational excellence.

All PMHA teams compete in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL), Canada's premier education-based hockey league. About the CSSHL

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy is proud to compete in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL), the premier league for Hockey Canada-sanctioned sport schools. Established in 2009 by five forward-thinking Hockey Canada Sport Schools, the league was created to provide elite student-athletes with a development pathway that combines high-level competition, academic achievement, and personal growth.

Since its inception, the CSSHL has experienced significant growth, expanding from eight teams in its inaugural season to becoming one of the most respected education-based hockey leagues in North America. Today, the league provides student-athletes with exceptional opportunities for development, competition, and exposure while maintaining a strong commitment to academic success.

All CSSHL member programs are sanctioned by Hockey Canada and operate under the governing bodies of Hockey Manitoba, Hockey Alberta, and BC Hockey, ensuring the highest standards of player development, safety, and program integrity.
